If you live in DFW, you probably know what happens around late September.
Suddenly, everyone has weekend plans.
The State Fair of Texas opens September 25 at Fair Park and runs through October 18. And while the Fair is obviously a big attraction, its return is also a sign that DFW’s social calendar is officially waking up.
It’s Not Just About Fried Food
Yes, there will be fried food.
A lot of fried food.
But the Fair is much bigger than figuring out how many things can reasonably be put on a stick.
The 2026 Fair has more than 100 daily attractions included with admission, including live entertainment, exhibits, shows, family activities, and the famous midway.
There are also nightly events like the Starlight Parade, plus a special drone show running October 2–4.
Basically, you can go for the food and accidentally spend six hours doing everything else.
Why This Matters If You’re Considering DFW
Here’s the interesting part for someone thinking about moving to North Texas:
The Fair is one example of the kind of local activity that fills DFW weekends throughout the year.
Dallas isn’t just about work, shopping, and houses.
It’s festivals, sports, concerts, neighborhood events, museums, food spots, and giant annual traditions that give the area a real rhythm.
And September is when that rhythm starts getting noticeably louder.
One Tiny Problem: It’s Still Texas
Don’t pack the sweaters just yet.
September can still be hot, so smart Fair-goers—and pretty much every other North Texan—know that timing matters. Evening visits can be especially appealing when the sun goes down, and the lights come on.
Because nothing says “fall” quite like wearing shorts while looking at pumpkins.
More Than a Fair
For someone outside DFW, the State Fair is worth experiencing—but don’t stop there.
Explore the neighborhoods. Try different parts of Dallas and Fort Worth. See where people actually spend their weekends.
Because finding a home is one thing. Finding the kind of everyday life you want around that home is the bigger picture.
